Carl begin his flute studies with Tacy Edwards, principal flutist of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic. He continued with William Hebert of the Cleveland Orchestra and with John Solum at Vassar College. He has performed in master classes for Paula Robison, Maurice Sharp, Ransom Wilson and Lady Jeanne Galway. He has a B.A. in Mathematics from Vassar College and an M.S. in Computer Science from Tufts University.
Highlight performances over the past few seasons include solo performances at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall; Troy Savings Bank Music Hall; the Cultural Center of Cape Cod; the Cape Cod Museum of Art; the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center; and the National Opera Center in NYC.
Carl was recently awarded the first prize in the National Flute Association’s Adult Amateur Competition (2022). Previously he was runner-up finalist of the Syrinx Flute Competition (London, 2020), placed 3rd and won the Audience Favorite Award of the Boulder Bach Festival’s World Bach Competition (Community, 2020), and in his student years won the SME Festival Concerto Competition.
After college Carl followed a career in Software Development and has worked for the past 25 years developing systems in air traffic control, publishing, education, e-commerce and finance. He is currently a Software Architect at Innovest Systems, LLC. Carl is also the Concert Manager of the Howland Chamber Music Circle in Beacon, NY. (https://carlgutowski.com/).
Carl’s journey back to performing—from an Open Mic to Carnegie Hall—was featured in the Cape Cod Times in March 2020.
Pianist Toshiko Jones lives in New York City.
She graduated from Kawassui Women’s College, Japan, in 1991 with a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance and a minor in Piano Performance.
In time, her passion leaned more towards piano performance and accompanying soloists on the piano.
