Open Mic Classical Cape Cod (aka the mic-less open mic) / Sunday, October 18th, 2015 @ 3pm
October's featured musiciasn, guitarist John Dirac, is delighted to join with Monika Woods in some chamber music for the historically unusual combo of guitar and clarinet; unusual despite the great opportunities for great subtleties in timbre, dynamics, and range; which is perhaps why composers were asked to write for guitar/clarinet in the Classical Guitar Competition at the New England Conservatory a few seasons ago.
Although not an official student at NEC, he was both a graduate and alumni at the nearby Berklee College of Music. Here he developed ensemble playing and jazz composition after an interim year at SUNY Purchase where he later got an MFA in composition.
For John who has been living on the Cape for 15 years it is a pleasant return, from playing jazz and gypsy jazz to acoustic bass and choral singing, to his roots of classical guitar and particularly to chamber music. We hope you enjoy the program.
John also has a few CD’s available on CD Baby and can be found on FACEBOOK.
Two with his partner Marcia Wytrwal on vocals; “Centerpiece” and “The Very Thought…” as well as a Country Blues CD called “M&M Blues” and a progressive Jazz CD called “Red Hawk Will Fly”
An “Open Mic” is for popular music only, right?
WRONG!
On October 18th, 2015 at 3:00 pm, we are bringing you Open Mic Classical, a new experience in classical music, to help our community's musicians share their music with a friendly, supportive and appreciative audience.
Are you a doctor with a classical horn habit, or an orchestra member who misses playing in small ensembles?
Are you an aspiring young student who doesn't ever get a chance to play with a pianist, but would like to develop your performing skills? Or a composer eager to try out your newest work?
Dust off your flugelhorn, oil your keys, and come share your talent in an intimate and casual atmosphere.
Admission is free, and classical musicians of all ages and levels are welcome.
Pianist on site is available to accompany you.
“Open Mic Classical” is brought to you by clarinetist Mónika Woods (winner of the Cape Symphony's 2013 Soloist Competition) and amateur violist and sculptor Robert Marcus representing First Parish Brewster, with Lucy Banner and Elizabeth Tipton as collaborative pianists.
It will be held at 3:00 pm on the third Sunday of every month through June at the Brewster Meeting House (1969 Main Street on Route 6A). Participants are asked to sign in at 2:45pm, rehearsal with pianist at 2pm.
